The Ammonia Trick in Cyanotype: Deep Tones, Brilliant Whites, and Process Control (with Due Caution)

Among historical photographic processes, the cyanotype is celebrated for its immediacy and its unmistakable Prussian blue. However, anyone who has printed even once has encountered one of its classic limitations: a slight bluish fog that clouds the highlights, and shadow blues that—depending on the paper used—can lack the magnetic, deep density that fully elevates a high-contrast image.

There is a remedy as surprising as it is effective—considered a veritable chemical heresy by many purists, but one that yields extraordinary results when handled with the utmost care: the use of a tiny amount of ammonia in the final wash bath.

Why Ammonia? The Chemical Foundation and Visual Benefits

The ammonia bath acts as an alkaline accelerator on the residues and structure of the cyanotype’s iron salts. This rapid treatment, if performed with precise timing, produces three immediate effects on print quality:

  • Radical Highlight Cleaning: It completely eliminates that annoying bluish haze or fog (often caused by minimal spontaneous oxidation of ferric salts during drying or by an imperfectly optimized wash) that stains unexposed areas of the paper.
  • Intensification and Toning of Blues: It pushes shadow blues toward deeper, richer, and more vibrant tones, reducing the tonal flattening typical of some less porous printing papers.
  • Expansion of Tonal Range: It increases perceived contrast and improves midtone separation, lending the print remarkable three-dimensional quality.

A Note on Long-Term Durability

Those who experiment with this technique rigorously testify that, years later, the prints show no signs of deterioration or anomalous shifting. The absolute secret to longevity lies in the subsequent phase: removing every single alkaline residue so that it does not continue to act over time, degrading the paper’s cellulose and the pigment.

⚠️ Warning: The Danger Zone and Risks to the Paper

This is not a procedure to be improvised or managed “by eye” without rigorous timing control. Ammonia is a strong base, highly aggressive toward both ferric emulsion and paper supports (especially high-quality 100% cotton fiber papers).

  • The Risk of Yellowing (The Point of No Return): If you overdo the concentration of the solution or leave the print immersed for too long, the strongly alkaline environment converts part of the complex into ferric hydroxide (rust). The result is disastrous: the whites are ruined irredeemably, taking on a permanent yellow-brown coloration.
  • Structural Fiber Stress: Prolonged exposure to ammonia weakens the cellulose bonds, making the paper brittle and vulnerable over time.
  • The Golden Rule: The action must be lightning-fast. Contact with the alkaline agent serves only to trigger the chromatic shift, not to “cook” the print.

The Four-Phase Operational Protocol

To apply this technique safely within your darkroom or studio workflow, it is advisable to follow this protocol scrupulously:

  1. Preliminary Standard Wash: Perform your normal running water rinse steps to completely remove unexposed chemistry (excess Ferric Ammonium Citrate and Potassium Ferricyanide). The print must already be clean before proceeding.
  2. Preparation of the Ultra-Dilute Solution: In a dedicated basin filled with clean water, pour just a few drops of common household ammonia. The water should barely hint at the characteristic pungent odor; the dilution must be extreme. Never measure by eye by pouring bottles directly into the tray.
  3. The Flash Immersion (3-5 seconds): Submerge the pre-rinsed cyanotype, moving it continuously with the aid of tongs or gloves. You will observe the blue transforming and intensifying almost instantly, while the highlights purify.
  4. Halt and Prolonged Rinsing: Immediately extract the print and transfer it without delay under a stream of running water (or into a tray with constant water turnover) for at least 10-15 minutes. This step is vital to arrest the chemical action and neutralize every residual trace of ammonia, stabilizing the cotton fiber.
